Elevated Rails, Hackney

(Published in Rising, April 2001)

Behind my house the railway arches
Of Victorian brick carry trains of
Commuter ghosts we never see.

Near our house, through the open arch, I
Stand at night beneath the unlit space
And hear trains straining above. The
Pointing leaks water, the energy that
Sustains this vault is neither brick nor
Mortal but compressed humanity of
London's ghosts. Waves of city history
Mutate here: this is where ghosts play and
Sleep. It is their stretched fingers that
Take you safely in and out of town.
